One Room Challenge Week 5+6: Bathroom Mood Board

White Cape Cottage

New to BITM? Welcome! We’re Catherine and Bryan Williamson, husband & wife business owners, interior designers, renovators and Airbnb Superhosts based in Columbus, OH.  We’ve renovated over a dozen houses since moving to Columbus, and are currently in the middle of upgrading my parents’ new (old) home.  It’s a 1950’s cape cod that we’ve dubbed White Cape Cottage.  We’re looking forward to having you along for the ride these next few weeks as we tackle the One Room Challenge. Make sure you’re following us on Instagram and subscribed to our email list for the latest updates on our progress!

Catch up on Week 1, Week 2, Week 3 and Week 4.

After a week of pause, we’re back with another update on our ORC.  Insulation is in, and drywall is going up in the bedroom and bathroom as we speak.  We finally received confirmation from our remaining sponsors and are excited to share more details on our bathroom design. The bathroom has enough room for a tub, shower, double vanity and toilet, and has lots of natural light thanks to the dormer we added.

We’re mixing classic and modern elements in this bathroom, and are even trying a few things for the first time thanks to our sponsors!

We’re going with a classic marble hexagon floor provided by the Tile Shop, and plan to mix in a few black marble hex tile pieces with the white hexagon mosaic to create a pattern.  If all goes well, we can begin tiling this weekend! We haven’t decided exactly what we are doing on the bathroom walls yet, but plan to do something to add texture.  We’re leaning toward beadboard or vertical tongue & groove – we really want it to lean more toward cottage style than farmhouse, so we’re going to play this one by ear and see how the rest of the space comes together.

Our shower fixtures, sink faucets and tub filler are all provided by Axor and Hansgrohe.  They all arrived last week and WOW, they are heavy and solid.  We chose polished nickel because it’s classy and warm, but not as warm as brass so it’ll balance out the other wood accents in the room. We’ll share close ups when we get everything unboxed – eeek!

The wood vanity is provided by Overstock and will look so great with our black & white floors.  We’re planning on replacing the vanity hardware with polished nickel hardware from Emtek (it feels a little dark as-is).  The two sets of doors will be getting new latches and the drawers will be getting new pulls.  Swapping it out is going to give the vanity a whole new look and help it tie in with the rest of the fixtures in the space.

Our pillar sconces are from Original BTC.  We ordered 4 – 2 will go outside the bathroom in the hallway, and 2 will flank the big bathroom mirror.  They’re going to give this bathroom the modern touch it needs.

We chose a 55″ tub from Overstock instead of the standard 60″+ to make room for a slightly larger shower.  We weren’t sure if it’d feel awkward, but honestly, we can’t even tell it’s short!

We want to add some color to this bathroom, so we’re going to experiment with some fabric from Fabricut.  It’ll be our first time doing patterned Roman shades in a bathroom!

Here’s a list of all of the sources in the mood board above.  There’s so much more to share with you!  We’ll be unboxing a lot of goodies from our generous sponsors over these next few weeks so make sure you’re following us on Instagram.

I grew up in New Jersey and always had a dream of living in New York.  There was something about the energy of the city that drew me inOur journey started unexpectedly in 2012, when we decided to make a big move from New York to Columbus. The glamour of climbing the corporate ladder was wearing off, and we knew that renting an expensive small apartment and dealing with crowded subways everyday was not going to work forever. We wanted to start creating something for ourselves, and although we didn’t know exactly what that something was, we knew NYC wasn’t the place for it.

We decided on Columbus because Bryan grew up here, and we were intrigued by all of the development going on in the downtown area at the time. We drove through many of the neighborhoods and admired the boarded up old houses, most of which were built in the early 1900s, and started dreaming about the things we could do here.

I'm Catherine, and I'm the founder of Beginning in the Middle.
