Beginning in the Middle

Decor in the Kitchen? YES.

Decor· Kitchen· White Cape Cottage

11 Jan

We all add décor to bedrooms, living rooms and dining rooms… why not kitchens, too?  Over the past few years, we’ve focused on designing kitchens that feel warm, homey and cozy – just like other rooms in the house – instead of being solely utility focused.  Adding a few key pieces like runners, artwork, plants and bowls can make all the difference!

This post is sponsored by Lowe’s.

Two of our favorite high-impact décor pieces in kitchens are rugs and art.  Colorful, low-pile rugs that add softness underfoot but are easy to clean and hide spills easily are key.  Art can be large or small, neutral or colorful depending on your style and available wall space.  We love large scale art on blank walls, but not all kitchens have this.  Mounting a small piece of art on a backsplash (Command Strips are great for this!) or incorporating art into shelf styling adds so much character.

We love incorporating plants, vases, and bowls that are beautiful but also functional. We love using decorative bowls and baskets to hold fruit!

We usually source kitchen décor from all over so we can curate a good mix of old and new.  Since we began working with Lowe’s on our White Cape Cottage kitchen renovation, we’ve been noticing a growing selection of décor available on Lowe’s.com in addition to the typical home improvement items we’re used to seeing.  We rounded up a few of our favorite finds below that would be great in a kitchen (and beyond)!

1 | A colorful runner or rug can instantly add a pop of character to any kitchen.  We love this rug because it’s 1) low-pile, 2) highly durable (polypropylene is great in kitchens because it’s so easy to clean), and 3) has a gorgeous vintage pattern.

2 | This antique style wooden bowl is from India and has the prettiest imperfect shape.

3 | Love the modern style of this black planter (it comes with the stand too).

4 | These storage tins are cute enough to leave out on the counter!

5 | A white vase for flowers, branches or clippings from your backyard year round.

6 | A hanging wall planter that’s great for small spaces.

7 | This marble plate with glass cloche cover makes displaying cookies, cakes and other things a no brainer.

8 | A beautiful Lazy Susan made from mango tree wood. This would be great in the dining room, too.

9 | Two separate compartments in one storage container!  Love the concrete look, wooden spoon, and functionality of this.

10 | A large hand-carved bowl made from reclaimed wood. It’s perfect for storing bread, fruit & veggies, and other items in the kitchen.  It’s a beauty!

Beautiful kitchen, especially with the light coming in, leaves out the window. Can you share the source for the beautiful backsplash tiles?

We swapped another switch in our house to a @lutro We swapped another switch in our house to a @lutronelectronics Caséta Smart Dimmer Switch, which allows us to control our lights remotely from the Lutron app, set lighting schedules, and create “scenes” that automatically adjust multiple lights in a room — no matter if we’re home or not. Our parlor chandelier dims down to 15% around sunset every evening (we also have our kitchen pendants set to turn on at 6am so we never have to walk into a dark kitchen in the morning!). The added control and convenience over our lighting is so nice, and being able to schedule them to come on/off throughout the day gives us extra security when we’re not home! #turnonpeaceofmind #sponsored
